Influencer gifting is sending your product to creators for free in the hope, or on the condition, that they post about it. Product seeding means no post is guaranteed, while a gifted collaboration trades the product for an agreed deliverable, such as one Reel by a set date. In the UAE and Saudi Arabia, gifting works best with nano and micro creators, for new launches and for products people want to open on camera. This guide covers who to send to, what a PR box costs in AED and SAR, how many posts to expect, how to ship across the GCC, and the disclosure rules that apply even when no money changes hands.
What is the difference between product seeding and a gifted collaboration?
Both start with a free product. The difference is what the creator has agreed to before the box arrives.
- Product seeding: you send the product with a note and no obligation. The creator posts if they like it. You get volume and honest reactions, but no control over timing, format or whether anything goes up at all.
- Gifted collaboration: the creator agrees to a specific deliverable in exchange for the product. For example, one Reel and three Stories within 14 days, with your handle tagged. You get a commitment, and you should write it down.
- Paid collaboration: product plus a fee. This is what you need once creators are past micro tier or when you need usage rights.
When does gifting work, and when does it waste product?
Gifting works when
- The creators are nano or micro. Accounts under roughly 50K followers often accept products they would have bought anyway. For the tier definitions, see our micro-influencers guide for MENA.
- The product is new. A launch, a new flavour, a limited edition. Creators want to be early, and "first look" content performs.
- The product is giftable. Skincare, fragrance, oud, dates and sweets, coffee, fashion accessories, tech gadgets, kids' products. Anything with a visual unboxing moment.
- The retail value is meaningful. In the ranges we see, products worth AED/SAR 150 or more get noticeably better post rates than sub AED 50 items.
Gifting does not work when
- The creator is mid-tier or above. Accounts with 50K to 250K followers receive boxes every week. A gift gets you a Story at best. If you need a Reel, pay the fee.
- The product is low value or hard to show. A single sachet, a service voucher, a B2B tool. There is nothing to film.
- You need a date. Seeding has no deadline. If the content has to be live for a Ramadan or White Friday push, use a gifted collaboration or a paid deal.
- The product needs explaining. Complex or regulated products need a brief and a review step, which means an agreement.
How many creators actually post after receiving a PR package?
There is no reliable public benchmark for the Gulf, so treat these as the ranges we see, not guarantees. The single biggest driver is whether the creator asked for the product.
| Approach | Share of creators who post (typical range) | What the post usually is |
|---|---|---|
| Unsolicited seeding (no contact before shipping) | 10 to 25% | Story, often a quick unboxing |
| Opt-in seeding (creator said yes first) | 40 to 70% | Stories, some Reels or TikToks |
| Gifted collaboration (deliverable agreed) | 80 to 95% | The agreed Reel, TikTok or Story set |
| Paid collaboration (product plus fee) | Close to 100% | Agreed deliverables, on schedule |
Which creators should you send products to?
Select before you ship. Every box sent to the wrong person is product, packaging and courier fees with nothing to show for it.
- Niche match. Their last 20 posts should include your category. A fitness creator for protein snacks, a beauty creator for serums.
- Audience location. If you sell in Saudi Arabia, a large share of the audience should be in Saudi Arabia. A Dubai account with most followers in another country will not sell your product in Dubai.
- Real engagement. In typical ranges, nano accounts sit around 4 to 8% engagement and micro accounts around 3 to 6%. Far below that, or suspiciously uniform comments, is a warning sign. Our guide to vetting influencers and spotting fake followers covers the checks.
- Evidence they post gifts. Look for past unboxings or "gifted" tags. Creators who never show gifted products are unlikely to start with yours.
- Language and dialect. Khaleeji for Saudi and wider Gulf audiences, English for much of Dubai. Match the market you are selling in.
How should you do outreach before shipping?
Ask before you ship. An opt-in message costs nothing and, in the ranges we see, roughly doubles or triples the post rate compared with unsolicited boxes. It also gets you the correct address, the right shade or size, and a creator who is expecting the parcel.
What the opt-in message should say
- What the product is, in one sentence, with a link.
- Whether it is seeding (no obligation) or a gifted collaboration (and exactly what you are asking for).
- What you need from them: address, phone number for the courier, size or shade.
- The disclosure you expect if they post: #ad or #إعلان.
If you are contacting 50 or more creators, send the messages in bulk with a branded template instead of one DM at a time. Copyable templates are in influencer outreach email templates. Another option is to reverse the process: publish an application link and let interested creators apply with their details, as explained in how to recruit influencers with an application link.
How do you ship PR packages across the GCC?
Domestic delivery
Inside the UAE, local couriers such as Aramex and same-day services cover Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, usually next day or faster. Inside Saudi Arabia, SMSA, Aramex and Naqel are common, and delivery between Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam typically takes one to three days. Always collect a phone number: Gulf couriers call before delivery, and a missing number is the most common reason a box comes back.
Cross-border shipping to Saudi Arabia
This is where most seeding programmes run from the UAE get stuck. Parcels to the Kingdom go through customs, and regulated categories (cosmetics, food, supplements, some devices) are generally expected to be registered with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), with the importer holding the relevant licence. Unregistered products can be held or returned. Rules and thresholds change, so verify your category with your courier or a customs broker before you ship.
The practical answer for most brands: if you already sell in Saudi Arabia, ship from stock inside the Kingdom through your local distributor or 3PL. If you do not, start seeding in the UAE and add Saudi creators once your products are registered and in-market.
Logistics checklist
- Confirm address, phone and size in writing before packing.
- Share the tracking number with the creator on dispatch.
- Log what went to whom, so you can match posts back to boxes.
How much does a PR box cost in AED and SAR?
The product is rarely the largest line. Packaging, a personal note and delivery add up quickly, especially for small batches. These are typical ranges for a mid-range consumer product.
| Line item | UAE (AED per box) | Saudi Arabia (SAR per box) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product (at cost) | 50 to 400 | 50 to 400 | Use cost price, not retail, for your maths |
| Packaging (branded box, tissue, filler) | 15 to 80 | 15 to 80 | Custom rigid boxes cost more at low volume |
| Domestic courier | 15 to 40 | 20 to 50 | Same-day and cash-on-delivery options cost more |
| Handwritten note or printed card | 5 to 20 | 5 to 20 | Handwritten, with the creator's name, is worth it |
| Team time (packing, tracking) | 10 to 30 | 10 to 30 | Often ignored, but real |
| Total per box | 95 to 570 | 100 to 580 | Before VAT: 5% in the UAE, 15% in Saudi Arabia |
Is gifting cheaper than paying micro-influencers?
Only if enough creators post. The number that matters is cost per post, not cost per box. Here is the maths for a 50-box campaign in the UAE at AED 250 per box, all in.
| Scenario | Total spend (AED) | Posts | Cost per post (AED) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unsolicited seeding, 15% post rate | 12,500 | About 8 | About 1,600 |
| Opt-in seeding, 55% post rate | 12,500 | About 28 | About 450 |
| Gifted collaboration, 90% post rate | 12,500 | About 45 | About 280 |
| 10 paid micro Reels at AED 3,000 plus product | 32,500 | 10 guaranteed Reels | About 3,250 |
Opt-in seeding and gifted collaborations beat paid micro deals on cost per post. Unsolicited seeding can end up close to the cost of a paid nano post (AED 350 to 1,500 in the UAE, SAR 400 to 1,500 in Saudi Arabia) without the guarantee. Paid posts win on format, timing and usage rights: a gifted Story is not the same asset as a briefed Reel you can run as an ad. For full rate tables, see influencer rates in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and MENA.
Posts are not sales, either. Give each creator a tracking link or a personal code so you can see which boxes produced orders. Our tracking links and UTM guide shows how to set this up.
Do gifted posts need to be disclosed, and do they need a licence?
Disclosure
Yes. A free product counts as compensation. Gifted content should carry #ad or #إعلان, clearly visible in the caption or on the Story, not buried among other hashtags. Put this in your opt-in message and your note so creators are not guessing.
UAE Advertiser Permit
The UAE Media Council's definition of advertising covers promotion for monetary compensation, non-monetary compensation, or free of charge. Gifted products and barter deals are widely read as falling inside the Advertiser Permit requirement, which has been mandatory since 1 February 2026. For UAE citizens and residents the permit is free for the first three years; visitors work through a licensed agency.
Saudi Mawthooq licence
In Saudi Arabia, guidance and legal commentary on the General Authority for Media Regulation's rules treat in-kind compensation (gifts, free products, hosted trips) as advertising that requires a Mawthooq licence, and licensed creators must disclose paid and gifted content. The regulator has published exemptions for some categories of individual, so confirm how the rules apply to your campaign with the authority or your lawyer. The full picture is in our UAE influencer licence and Saudi Mawthooq guide.
The practical rule for brands: for any gifted collaboration, check that the creator holds a valid permit or licence for the country, the same way you would for a paid deal. For a written agreement covering deliverables and disclosure, start from our influencer contract template for the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
How often should you follow up with creators?
One structured cadence is enough. More than that turns a gift into pressure, which is exactly what seeding is supposed to avoid.
- Day 0 (dispatch): send the tracking number and a one-line thank you.
- Day 2 to 3 (delivered): confirm it arrived in good condition. Offer a replacement if anything is damaged.
- Day 10 to 14: one friendly check-in. For seeding, ask what they thought, not whether they will post. For gifted collaborations, confirm the agreed date.
- After a post goes live: thank them, reshare with credit, and log the post, reach and any clicks or code uses.
How do you turn gifted posters into paid ambassadors?
Seeding is also a low-cost way to find your future ambassadors. After each wave, rank creators by what they produced, not by follower count.
- Posted without being asked, and more than once. They genuinely like the product.
- Drove clicks or code uses above the campaign average.
- Made content you would run as an ad: clear hook, good light, product visible in the first seconds.
- Their audience asked questions about price or where to buy.
Offer the top 5 to 10% a paid arrangement: a monthly retainer for a set number of posts, an affiliate code with commission, or paid usage rights on the content they already made. At nano and micro tier, a three-month ambassador deal typically costs in the range of one to three paid posts a month at the UAE and KSA rate anchors above. You will get more consistent content from someone who already likes your product than from a cold paid deal. Brief them properly from here on, using our influencer brief template. If you are a venue rather than a product brand, the same logic applies to hosted visits: see the restaurants and cafés playbook.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between product seeding and a gifted collaboration?
Product seeding is sending a product with no guaranteed post; the creator shares it only if they like it. A gifted collaboration is an exchange agreed in advance: the product in return for a specific deliverable, such as one Reel by a set date. Seeding is cheaper per box but less predictable; gifted collaborations cost the same product but give you a commitment.
Do gifted posts need #ad or #إعلان in the UAE and Saudi Arabia?
Yes. UAE Media Council rules and Saudi guidance both treat promotion in exchange for free products as advertising, so gifted content should be labelled #ad or #إعلان. Gifted content is also widely treated as advertising for the UAE Advertiser Permit and the Saudi Mawthooq licence. Check the current rules with the regulator or your lawyer before a campaign.
How many creators actually post after receiving a PR package?
In the ranges we see, unsolicited seeding to creators who were not asked first gets posts from roughly 10 to 25% of recipients. Opt-in seeding, where creators confirmed they want the product, typically lands at 40 to 70%. Gifted collaborations with an agreed deliverable run well above that, because the post is part of the deal.
Can I send gifts to Saudi creators from Dubai?
You can, but cross-border shipments to Saudi Arabia go through customs, and regulated categories such as cosmetics, food and supplements generally need to be registered with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority to clear. Many brands ship to Saudi creators from stock already inside the Kingdom. Confirm the requirements for your category with your courier or customs broker before you ship.
